Worldwide manufacturing data dominated the economic data releases yesterday at the start of the trading week and month.

Significant slowdowns were shown in the manufacturing data releases from the UK, the euro zone and China.

The Pound shrugged off the data release showing that UK manufacturing slipped to its lowest reading since June 2013 by rising to briefly trade at its best level against the Euro since July 2012 in yesterday’s foreign exchange market.

The data for the euro zone showed the worst manufacturing performance out of the euro zone for 13 months. Ahead of Thursday’s latest policy announcement from the European Central Bank, the data will cause concern given that a manufacturing slow down was particularly prominent in the euro zone’s traditional powerhouse, Germany.

The market rally of the last few days quickly evaporated yesterday from the worse than expected world-wide manufacturing data. Ahead of the data releases from the UK and the euro zone, China announced that growth in China's manufacturing sector also eased in August.

Analysts commented that the monthly decline reflected a slower expansion of output and total new business while manufacturers' selling prices were reduced as competition for new businesses increased. Of concern, the data also showed that China saw its biggest increase in unemployment in the sector in three months.

The currency market was unusually quiet yesterday ahead of a string of key economic data and central bank policy announcements due out over the next four days.
